Connecticut Students Put Virtual History to the Test
Luis Muñoz Marín Middle School, Bridgeport CT

When Maria Miranda, Principal of the Luis Muñoz Marín Middle School in Bridgeport Connecticut, found out that a scheduling conflict had bumped the class with which she had originally planned to test Virtual History - Ancient Egypt, she thought she would have to cancel the software test. Instead she got creative and decided to really put Virtual History to the test. Maria decided to let the in-school suspension class that was already in the library computer lab, test Virtual History – Ancient Egypt. “You have to almost believe in Divine Intervention when you recall that our students were selected because of a scheduling conflict. Choosing the students who were in the in-school suspension class that day proved to be perfect. These students who normally cannot stay on task were totally engaged. Watching them interact with the computer, make educated decisions and enjoy themselves says a lot for Virtual History."

That first test was so successful that Maria decided to reschedule a second test for the original class. After that test session Robert Memoli, the 6th Grade teacher at the Luis Muñoz Marín Middle School whose class had the opportunity to use the software, said, “I thought that Virtual History – Ancient Egypt was creative in nature and very educational. It took the concept of an ancient civilization's struggle for survival and turned it into a modern day game. It incorporated historical facts, graphics and reading passages, and turned them into a fun way to learn. It is the perfect format to embellish the teaching of ancient civilizations to modern students. One of my students, Demetrius, said, 'This game is cool. It really made me want to read and answer the questions. I loved getting more workers and getting to the next level.' Another one of my students, Rinish, said, 'This makes learning about Egypt more interesting. Now I know why planting food and building shelter is so important.' "

After seeing Virtual History - Ancient Egypt in the classroom both Maria and Robert wanted to know the same thing, "Will there be other simulations besides Ancient Egypt?" They were happy to hear that the answer is yes.
